What Is Hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by excessive sweating in the underarms, palms, and feet, more than is required to regulate body temperature. An estimated 3% of Americans suffer from excessive sweating. This condition is embarrassing and hard to disguise. Hyperhidrosis can affect a person’s confidence, productivity, and quality of life – professionally and personally.
Who Is An Ideal Candidate For This Treatment?
This treatment is typically recommended for people who have tried everything but cannot get relief — even with the strongest antiperspirants or medication. This treatment is for anyone suffering from the embarrassment or disruption of hyperhidrosis. Dysport® alleviates the excessive sweat and reduces body odor or bromhydrosis that may accompany it.
What Is Dysport®? How Does It Work To Alleviate Hyperhidrosis?
Dysport® is a medical muscle-relaxing agent derived from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. The treatment is very safe. It interrupts nerve impulses from the brain to relax muscle activity without directly affecting the nerves and muscles. Dysport® injections alleviate severe sweating by blocking the nerves that supply the sweat glands. Precise placement of injections is critical to effectively stopping the glands from producing sweat. Injections are made with a very tiny needle just below the surface of the skin and is relatively painless.

Which areas can be treated with Dysport® for Hyperhidrosis?
Underarms
Dysport ® injections work well for nearly all cases of underarm sweating. Most people achieve a 90% reduction in sweating.
Palms
We have seen that Dysport ® injections are very effective at treating palmar sweating.
Forehead
Dysport ® injections work very well for sweating of the frontal scalp and upper forehead. Only a few injections are needed to control sweating in this area.
Feet (Plantar)
Many individuals are highly satisfied with treatment of the feet. However, the results are not as consistent as has been observed with the hands.
Other treatment areas
We have had success treating excessive sweating in the groin, chest and lower back.
FAQs
Prior the treatment : Numbing cream can be applied to the area for 20-30 minutes before the treatment. Some patients prefer not to use this and opt for an ice pack to numb the area instead. Many patients do not require either. Please be advised that for underarm treatments, we will require the area to be freshly shaved or the hairs to be trimmed to a length of 1cm long.
The actual procedure takes about 10-15 minutes. A series of small injections are placed in the treatment areas with a very fine needle.
Simply avoid touching, rubbing or applying anything on the treated area for 4 hours to prevent infection and spreading of the medicine. Also, it is recommended to avoid strenuous exercise and sauna use for 24 hours after the procedure.
Dysport® injections can be quickly administered during an office visit. The treatment does not demand any restrictions of a patient (except for refraining from intensive exercise or the use of a sauna on the day of the injections). The treatment itself takes about 10 minutes, and the entire appointment takes 30-45 minutes.
You should notice initial improvement of excessive sweating within 2-3 weeks.
How Many Treatments Are Needed?
One treatment alleviates hyperhidrosis. Treatment needs to be repeated when effects fade, usually in 4-12 months. Repeated treatment is safe and effective for hyperhidrosis and consistently results in long-lasting improvements and a significant reduction in excessive sweating – improving quality of life.
How Often Do I Need Treatment?
Your symptoms will return gradually, and you will know when the time is right for another treatment.
It is recommended to have the treatment every 6 months to receive the best possible results. A plan for regular follow-up treatments to maintain the initial result can be created for you.
The effects of Dysport ® injections usually last approximately 4 to 6 months. Some patients are free of excessive sweating for more than 7 months to a year. Individual results vary and cannot be guaranteed, though.
No. Patients can have treatment and return to normal daily activities immediately. The only recommendation to follow is to refrain from intense exercise and sauna use the day of the injections.
Will Insurance Cover This Treatment?
Insurance usually will not cover the cost of this treatment. Our office can discuss this with you at your consultation.
How Is The Dysport Dosage Determined?
To keep the cost down, we prefer to start with the lowest dose in the proven effective range. A follow up is recommended 2 weeks after treatment to assess results. We increase the dosage only if desired results are not achieved at the lower dose.
What Is The Cost Of Dysport Hyperhidrosis Treatment?
The cost is based on the size of the individual’s treatment area and dosage is individual.
The cost for Dysport unit equivalent is $9, but we do occasionally have limited time specials which reduce the cost.
Axilla, underarms:
Treatment for both underarms requires 100-150 unit equivalents to achieve desired result in most patients. The cost of treatment for the underarms is typically between $900 and $1350.
Palmar, palms:
Treatment for both palms requires 100-200 unit equivalents to achieve desired result. The dosage depends on the size of the treatment area. The cost of treatment for the palms is typically around $900-$2000.
Plantar, feet:
Treatment for both feet requires 100-200 unit equivalents to achieve desired result. The dosage depends on the size of the treatment area. The cost of treatment for the feet is typically around $900-$2000.

What If I Decide To Stop Having This Treatment?
If you decide not to have further treatment, your sweating will gradually return to its pre-treated state. The effects of the treatment will gradually wear off, and your sweating will resume.
Your sweat doesn’t go anywhere or get backed up because the sweat simply is not produced in the treated areas. Remember, the rest of your body is free to produce moisture normally.
Is Dysport® Hyperhidrosis Treatment Right For Me?

In order to make the right treatment decision, you should tell them about all of your medical conditions. This includes allergies to any botulinum toxin product, any side effects from any botulinum toxin products in the past, whether you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant (it is not known if it can harm your unborn baby), if you are breast-feeding or plan to breastfeed (It is not known if Botulinum toxin passes into breast milk) and all of the medicines you currently take. This includes prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins and herbal products.

Abstract-
BACKGROUND:
Botulinum toxin (BTX) is an effective treatment for primary axillary hyperhidrosis. In this study we used two toxins not bioequivalent: BOTOX® (Allergan, Inc.) and Dysport® (Beaufour Ipsen Biotech).
OBJECTIVE:
The objective was to compare the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of BOTOX® and Dysport® in the treatment of primary axillary hyperhidrosis using a conversion factor of 1:3, respectively.
METHODS:
In a double-blind, randomized prospective study, 10 patients with primary axillary hyperhidrosis and sweat production exceeding 50 mg/minute received 50 U of BOTOX in one axilla and 150 U of Dysport® in the other. We performed Minor’s test and gravimetry at 0 days, at 15 days, and monthly for 1 year.
RESULTS:
No significant difference was observed in the sweating quantity at baseline. After 1 month all patients had achieved success for both axillae. The sweat rate was reduced by a mean of 97.7% for BOTOX and 99.4% for Dysport®, without statistical difference. The duration of benefits was similar between both toxins, with a mean of 260 days for BOTOX® and 290 days for Dysport®, without statistical difference. The longest symptom-free interval was 12 months (5 patients, 55.6%).
CONCLUSIONS:
BOTOX® and Dysport® presented similar levels of safety and efficacy in the treatment of primary axillary hyperhidrosis when a conversion factor of 1:3 was used.
